City of Wellman locks down City Hall

Posted

The city of Wellman is taking some precautionary measures in response to heightened awareness of the spread of the coronavirus.

At Monday’s meeting, the city council decided to close City Hall to the public.

City staff will continue working but behind locked doors.

The will also work to ensure that public works employees have limited public interaction.

A question was raised regarding whether the city should grant leniency to people who are struggling to pay utility bills.

“I know in our town there are some people who won’t have jobs,” council member Shannon McCain said.

The consensus was that, rather than change the policy, the matter should be handled on a case-to-case basis.

“I’d rather have people call us and explain why they can’t pay,” City Administrator Kelly Litwiller said. “We can have people call in and make payment arrangements. We’ll work with them.”

Mayor Ryan Miller said that in the coming days, there will be more information about aid to people who are unable to work.
