City election votes made official by Board of Supervisors

School board votes won’t be official until Nov. 19 meeting

Posted

The Washington County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday morning approved the results of city elections in Kalona, Riverside and Wellman.

The school board results will not be official for another week because each of the districts includes multiple counties where the individual votes in each county need to be canvassed, and then the Washington County board will vote on Nov. 19 to make the combined county results official.

Here are the official results for each city, and the unofficial results for the school districts.

Kalona city

Kalona City Council member Mark Robe won his uncontested race for Kalona mayor with 186 votes.

Incumbent council members Jenelle Bender (186 votes) and Greg Schmidt (157 votes) held their seats in uncontested races as well.

The city council will have to appoint someone to fill Robe’s unexpired term once the new council is seated in January.

Lone Tree city

Lone Tree has a new mayor, Joanne Havel who garnered 172 votes.

For the Lone Tree City Council, all of the candidates were unopposed. Dave Wageman (221 votes) and Ruby Dickey (171 votes) were elected to full terms. Incumbent Mitch Swinton filled a two-year vacancy on the council with 242 votes.

Riverside city

Allen Schneider, running unopposed, was re-elected Riverside mayor with 175 votes.

Three candidates were running for three open seats on the council. Jeanine Redlinger was the top vote getter with 145 votes. Edgar McGuire collected 132 votes, and former Highland school board member received 111 votes.

There was a significant number of write-in votes but not enough to alter the results. Sixty-nine voters cast write-in ballots.

County election official Sue Meeks said there were 42 write-in votes for Kevin Mills, plus 18 votes where the voter just wrote “Mills.” There was a scattering of nine other write-in votes.

Wellman city

Three seats were up for grabs on the Wellman City Council, with four candidates running.

Winners were:

• Aaron Fleming, 30.6% (129 votes)

• Angela Stutzman, 30.4% (128 votes)

• Anthony Evans, 25.2% (106 votes)

Heather Molczyk finished fourth with 12.4% (52 votes).

Highland schools

In the only contested race in the Highland school district, longtime Riverside City Councilperson Robert Schneider Jr. lost to newcomer Samantha Holden. Holden won the District 4 seat, currently held by Schneider’s wife, Lois, with 230 votes compared with 124 votes for Robert Schneider Jr.

In District 2, Mike Golden was re-elected with 294 votes. In District 6, Kathy Butler captured 295 votes, and Nate Robinson retained the at-large seat with 304 votes.

The vote totals include both Washington and Johnson counties.

Lone Tree schools

With four people running for two open seats on the Lone Tree school board, the winners were Joe Williams with 244 votes and incumbent Joel Yedlik with 226 votes.

Trailing the two winners were Richard Burr with 145 votes and Brandon David Dix with 42 votes.

The vote totals include both Johnson and Louisa counties.

Mid-Prairie schools

In the Mid-Prairie school board race, four incumbents held their seats.

Results from both Washington and Johnson counties were:

• Marianne Schlabach, 23.1% (411 votes)

• Denise Chittick, 21.9% (389 votes)

• Jeremy Pickard, 21.3% (380 votes)

• Mary Allred, 17.4% (309 votes)

Challenger Angela Lamb received 16.3% (291 votes) in her unsuccessful bid for a seat.

Jeremy Gugel was unopposed for a two-year seat.

In addition, two measures passed easily.

The 10-year voted Physical Plant and Equipment Levy renewal passed by a 373-to-122 margin.

The renewal of the district’s Revenue Purpose Statement passed 420 to 76.
