Cities coordinate on mobile food pantries

The cities of Riverside, Kalona and Wellman will again join forces to provide food for those in need.

The three cities are planning to host pop-up food pantries on the morning of May 2.

The cities teamed up for a pop-up food pantry on April 18 at the city shop on A Avenue in Kalona.

“The biggest difference this upcoming distribution on May 2 will be that there will be pick up locations in both Wellman and Riverside as well,” Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said.

Distribution locations will be:

• Kalona: 711 A Avenue (city shop).

• Wellman: City Hall.

• Riverside: Hall Park near the concession stand.

All three locations will be open from 9-11 a.m. for anyone needing food assistance.

“Staff and volunteers will fill boxes prior to May 2 in Kalona, and then pick up the boxes in Kalona and add the cold items the morning of May 2,” Riverside City Administrator Christine Yancey said.

The cities already have enough volunteers for Saturday’s pop-up pantries.

“We have enough volunteers for packing and handing out the food,” Wellman City Administrator Kelly Litwiller said.

Schlabaugh added, “I don’t believe at this time we would request volunteers.”

However, anyone wishing to help can make a monetary donation.

“Should anyone want to donate funds that will go directly to the purchase of food for distribution they can make the donation to the city of Kalona,” Schlabaugh said. “The city administrators will manage the funds for the betterment of our communities.”

Schlabaugh said that the food that will be distributed is being purchased through the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, with other items coming from JW’s grocery in Kalona and Freeman Foods in Wellman.

For those who are unable to make the trip to one of the locations, deliveries can be arranged.

Residents of Kalona should call City Hall at 319-656-2310. Residents of Wellman can call City Hall at 319-646-2154. Riverside residents can call Yancey directly at 319-930-8440.

Schlabaugh said anyone needing after-hours assistance can call 319-936-9354.
