Lone Tree junior Kasey Chown missed on her first two attempts at 4-foot-6 during Thursday’s conference meet at WACO, but on her third, she made an adjustment. 

“I got more speed,” Chown said about her third attempt. “And I normally lean into it, so I just tried to stay upright longer and then lean.”

It worked, as Chown matched the best jump of her career at 4-06 and took home the conference title. She entered the conference meet seeded behind a pair of Mediapolis freshmen, who jumped 4-10 and 4-08 earlier in the season, but Chown flew the highest on Thursday. 

Avery Lisk also scored points for the Lady Lions individually with a seventh-place finish of 12-11.5 in the long jump. Lone Tree’s distance medley of Lindsay Werbach, Katie Franker, Lisk, and Lila Bell finished fourth with a time of 5:32.42.

Both the Lone Tree girls and boys finished eighth out of nine teams. The girls finished with 26 points and the boys scored 45, led by Alex Viner who had 8.25. 

Viner’s fourth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles was a personal best time of 17.31. Nick Staltzman also set a new personal record of 5:02 with a sixth-place finish in the 1600-meter run.

The distance medley of Cade Patterson, Viner, Cade Shield, and Staltzman finished fourth with a season-best time of 3:57.91. 

“(Viner and Staltzman) have been working very hard all year and having a lot of success,” coach Mike Close said. “They have been pushing in their events all year long, and they’ve been great role models and teammates for our entire team.”

Cale Christofferson ran his fastest time of the season in the 800-meter run, finishing seventh with a time of 2:20.51. Shield also finished seventh in the long jump with a leap of 17-06.5

Lone Tree will be back at WACO on Thursday, May 13 for 1A state-qualifying meet. The top finisher in each event will automatically qualify for the state tournament, and the next 14 best times or distances across the 10 district meets will qualify as well.
