Christmas in Kalona returns on Saturday.
The Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce is planning a number of events for its annual Christmas in Kalona festival.
Most activities will be at the Kalona Community Center, with other activities throughout downtown.
“We are really excited about this year’s Christmas in Kalona festival and hope everyone who attends enjoys the day,” said Christmas in Kalona Chair Jody Larimer, manager of the Kalona CBI Bank & Trust branch.
One of the most anticipated events is the arrival of Santa by firetruck at noon at the west entrance of the Kalona Community Center.
Santa will be posing for photos with children until 2 p.m.
While at the Community Center, children will also be able to decorate cookies and holiday ornaments and get their faces painted.
Also at the Community Center is the annual Handcrafted and Product Vendor Show from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
The show, featuring more than 30 vendors, is sponsored by the chamber and the Kalona Historical Village.
New this year is the Christmas costume contest.
Visitors are encouraged to dress in holiday attire if interested in participating in the contest.
There will be a station where participants can take photos and submit for judging.
Entries will need to be submitted by 2 p.m. Winners will be announced at 3 p.m. Share your photo with #ChristmasInKalona to enter.
Another tradition, the annual cookie walk, will be held in the Velma Skola meeting room at the Kalona Public Library from noon-2 p.m.
The Walking Stocking returns to the annual event and children can pick up stockings at the Kalona Chamber office, 514 B Ave., Dec. 7-24.
Children can take this special stocking around to participating merchants to get a special holiday gift. Watch for the special stocking poster in the windows of the participating merchants.
There will be four firepits serving up s’mores to visitors as they walk around downtown Kalona from noon-6 p.m.
The firepits will be at the Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce, Kalona General Store, Kalona Chocolates and the Kalona Brewing Company.
Capping off the day will be free horse-drawn carriage rides from 6-8 p.m. courtesy of Warren and Paula Miller of the Tuscan Moon.
