The field of candidates is set for the Nov. 5 combined city and school elections.

The deadline for candidates to file to run in the election was 5 p.m., Sept. 19.

This is the first year of combined city and school elections.

In 2017, the Iowa Legislature passed a law moving school elections from September to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November on odd-numbered years.

Wellman City Council

Three Wellman City Council seats are on the ballot.

However, all three incumbents – Bob Goodrich, Bob Freeman and Tracy Owens – are not seeking re-election.

There are four candidates vying for the three at-large seats: Angela Stutzman, Anthony Evans, Aaron Fleming and Heather Molczyk.

Kalona City Council

In Kalona, two council seats and the mayor’s seat will be on the November ballot.

Mayor Ken Herington opted not to seek re-election.

Council member Mark Robe is the lone candidate for mayor of Kalona

Incumbent council members Jenelle Bender and Greg Schmidt are both unopposed in their bids for re-election.

Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said that the new council, once seated in January, will have to either appoint someone to serve out the remainder of Robe’s council term or call for a special election.

Mid-Prairie school board

There are five Mid-Prairie school board seats on November’s ballot – four four-year seats and one two-year seat.

Incumbents Mary Allred, Denise Chittick, Jeremy Pickard and Marianne Schlabach, as well as newcomer Angela Lamb will compete for the four open four-year seats.

Jeremy Gugel, who was appointed to the board in August, is the lone candidate for the two-year seat.

Riverside City Council

Mayor Allen Schneider is running unopposed for re-election.

On the council, incumbents Edgar McGuire and Jeanine Redlinger are running for two of the three open seats. Lois Schneider, currently on the Highland school board, is running for the seat currently held by her husband, Robert Schneider Jr. Robert Schneider is running for Lois’s Highland school board seat.

Highland school board

In one of the few contested elections on the November ballot, two candidates are running for the District 4 seat currently held by Lois Schneider. Samantha Holden and Robert Schneider Jr. are on the ballot.

Incumbent Mike Golden in District 2 and Kathy Butler in District 6 are unopposed. Current school board President Nate Robinson is running unopposed for the at-large school board seat.

Lone Tree City Council

Mayor Jonathan Green decided not to run for another term. Joanne Havel is unopposed to replace him.

Incumbent Ruby Dickey and David Wageman are running unopposed for the two open four-year terms on the Lone Tree City Council. Wageman was recently appointed to fill the seat left open when Sandy Flake resigned from the council.

Incumbent Mitch Swinton is running unopposed for a two-year term to fill a vacancy on the council.

Lone Tree school board

The Lone Tree school board will have some newcomers. There are three seats open with Joel Yedlik the only incumbent on the ballot.

Richard Burr, Bradon David Dix and Joseph Williams will compete with Yedlik for the three open seats.
