When the Mid-Prairie boys basketball team needed a spark in their game Feb. 6 against Anamosa In Wellman, they turned to senior guard Brad Tornow. His big baskets helped the Golden Hawks to a 76-54 win in River Valley Conference action.
Tornow is better known on the basketball for his passing and defensive ability and he used the latter to put the Golden Hawks in the lead in the second quarter against the Raiders. On back-to-back possessions, the senior guard picked the pocket of Anamosa dribblers after just crossing mid-court that led to easy break-away lay-ins to break a tie and give Mid-Prairie a 28-24 lead.
Near the end of the third quarter, Tornow took his game beyond the perimeter to essentially put the game away. A 3-pointer with 1:30 remaining in the third gave the Golden Hawks their first double-digit lead at 54-44. He followed that with an NBA-range 3-pointer from the left wing to extend the lead to 57-44.
“Last night was another example of how (Brad) has stepped up in many different ways throughout his career,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Daren Lambert. “His confidence has grown with his scoring abilities throughout this year and last night he did a great job of letting the game come to him.
“Brad is a guy that is a true leader and our guys look to him to make the plays he did last night and to put others In situations to be successful.”
Anamosa started on fire against Mid-Prairie hitting 3-pointers left and right to take an early edge. An Aidan Rath 3-pointer gave Mid-Prairie a 15-12 lead, but Anamosa took an 18-16 after one quarter.
It continued to be tight until Tornow’s steal and lay-ins gave the Golden Hawks a lead they would not relinquish. The lead would be four at 34-30 at halftime.
Mid-Prairie continued to hold that lead until Tornow’s back-to-back 3-pointers widened the gap as the lead would grow to more than 20 by game’s end.
Tornow finished with 17 points, four assists, and three steals. Rath added a double-double effort of 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Mid-Prairie’s busy stretch of four games in five days continued into a tilt the following night at division-leading West Branch. They used the momentum from the Anamosa win to take a 47-41 upset win over the Bears.
