Area volleyball season ends with first-round exits

Posted

The deck was stacked against area volleyball teams as multiple drew ranked or formerly ranked teams in their first-round matches of regional play.

All four lost in straight sets, ending the volleyball season.

 West Liberty 3, Mid-Prairie 0

It was the fourth time West Liberty and Mid-Prairie met this season and much like the other times the Comets proved their Class 3A No. 2 ranking with a 25-11, 25-14, 25-8 win over the Golden Hawks.

A bright spot for Mid-Prairie was their front line. They combined for seven total blocks on the night. Tori Boyse, Alyssa McDowell and Myah Lugar each had two blocks.

Senior Cassidy Hershberger had 10 digs and five assists in her final match as a Golden Hawk.

Myah Lugar and Tori Boyse led the team with three kills each.

Mid-Prairie finishes with a 6-22 record.

New London 3, Hillcrest Academy 0

The Ravens finished their season 0-26 with a 25-8, 25-8 and 25-12 loss to New London.

New London senior Addie Pry had 13 kills to lead the Tigers.

Hillcrest’s Yani Gutierrez had four kills to lead the Ravens. Esther Hughes had three and Danae McGaffey had two.

Malia Sedlacek continued to be a strong presence on defense, with 12 digs. She also went 6-7 on serves.

Hughes also had one block.

WACO 3, Highland 0

From the first serve, the Warriors weren’t messing around.

WACO had a height advantage at the net and made full use of it in a 25-4, 25-8, 25-12 win over the Huskies.

WACO had two over 10 kills as Lona Farrier had 11 and Morgan Graber had 10.

The Huskies worked in some younger players hoping to cause a spark, and played competitively in the third set.

It was the final game for seniors Haley Sweeting, Alyssa Brase, Rafiela Selmer, Emily Streb and Kaylee Rath.

Springville 3, Lone Tree 0

The Orioles defeated the Lady Lions 25-10, 25-11 and 25-8 to end Lone Tree’s season.

Holley Johnson had 14 digs and three kills in the loss. Kylie Patterson was 8-8 with one ace and three kills.

Senior Whitney Willoz racked up dougle-digit assists with 10.

Lone Tree had finished their regular season with back-to-back wins before the loss to Springville.
