Anamosa stifle Hawks potential comeback

The Hawks finally gained momentum after chasing from behind all night. All tied games lead to overtime and that’s seemingly where the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks are heading.

Then, with a minute and 17 seconds left on the clock, Anamosa delivered the dagger, scoring their fifth goal of the night to steal a comeback win from the Hawk’s talons.

With all of their might, the Hawks pushed desperately to find yet another tying goal, failing to do so and falling to the Anamosa Blue Raiders 5-4 and dropping to 5-3 on the year.

“It was a good game for us because we played last night, we’re tired today. Anamosa is a good team,” Mid-Prairie head coach Truman Shetler said. “It was good to see the team respond and continue to keep playing even when we get down a little bit.”

The Hawks were playing from behind almost immediately.

Anamosa opened the scoring with two goals coming 46 seconds apart, less than five minutes in. Down 2-0 right away, the Hawks soared down the field and senior Paityn Jennings scored off a rebound to cut the lead in half. This goal came 18 seconds after the second Anamosa goal.

Six minutes later freshman, Elise Gingerich, found a clearing, took a shot, and banked it, tying the game.

In this high-octane first half, it did not take long for Anamosa to steal the lead once more. Four minutes later and the score was 3-2 in favor of the Blue Raiders.

Then, 15 minutes of silence.

Senior, Amara Jones, really found her pace in this game. Jones controlled play each and every time Mid-Prairie had a rush. Jones drew a penalty and senior, Kina Miller, took the penalty shot and boom! Tied game once more. Going into halftime, each team found the net three times.

Jones had a big first half. Her second half was dominant. Just a minute into the second half and she almost gave Mid-Prairie a lead, shooting the ball and watching the post stop it. Jones took a beating in this game too, getting kneed by the defense and knocked down in physical efforts to gain possession.

“[Amara is] very physically durable. She did the same thing in basketball,” Shetler said. “It’s good to see that she’s able to pop back up and just keep on going, doesn’t complain about anything. [It’s] good to have her on the team.”

Seven minutes into the second and Anamosa took a 4-3 lead. Just under 20 minutes in and Anamosa had a penalty kick opportunity. They missed. A pivotal moment berthing life for the Hawks. Jones finally found the net, tying the game with 14:43 left and giving Mid-Prairie all of the momentum.

Jones then had at least three breakaways, getting no help. Jones was simply too fast.

Just when everyone thought overtime was inevitable, Anamosa scored with just over a minute left to stop the Mid-Prairie momentous comeback.

Coming off of a tough loss the night before traveling to Anamosa against Solon, it is time for a rebound against Tipton.

MID-PRAIRIE V. TIPTON 4/24

The visiting Tipton Tigers made way to the Wellman Rotary fields to face off against the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks, having something to prove after a 4-0 start and a 1-3 follow-up. This game needed double overtime to crown a victor. Junior Zoey Curtiss, scored the game winner, giving Mid-Prairie the 2-1 final.

Mid-Prairie goaltender, Kina Miller, played at goalie for 93 minutes and had 20 saves, a big night for the senior.

Mid-Prairie’s first goal was scored by Amara Jones. Jones took 12 shots in the game, making her presence known.

The Hawks have another busy week, taking flight against Wapello on Tuesday, April 25 and returning home on Friday, April 28, for a match against Maquoketa.
