AmVets to hold only Memorial Day service

The Richmond AmVets Post No. 107 will conduct Memorial Day services on Monday, May 25.

The first service will be at Sharon Hills Cemetery in Kalona at 10 a.m., followed by a service at the Richmond Catholic cemetery at 10:30 a.m.

There will be no band or other groups participating in the services.

“The public is welcome to attend either along the road outside their vehicles or within the grounds as long as social distancing is followed,” Kevin Reece of the Richmond AmVets said.

He added that there will be no public activities at the AmVets post afterwards.

VFW Post 6414 in Riverside will not host its annual Memorial Day service.

“Unfortunately, we won’t be doing it this year,” said Post Commander Bret Frank.

Volunteers still plan to put up the small flags and crosses at the cemetery in Riverside beginning at 6 p.m., Friday.

“We just won’t be putting up the big flags on the poles,” Frank said.

The Charles Polton American Legion Post No. 427 in Wellman, which usually hosts a service at the Wellman Cemetery, is not planning any public service this year.

Post Commander Chuck Singleman said that there only will be a private ceremony with the honor guard, salute and “Taps.”

Lone Tree American Legion Post No. 457 announced earlier this month that they were canceling their Memorial Day service.
