Highland’s little golf team left the SEISC meet in Fort Madison with a fifth place finish and a pair of all-conference awards.

The Huskies took just four golfers to Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course on Monday, May 10 and finished just a stroke behind fourth place Van Buren County with 498 strokes, led by Charlie Aicher, who earned second team all-conference honors with her score of 109.

Highland was the only team in the top seven to bring fewer than six golfers to the conference meet. Columbus and Central Lee, who also brought just four, finished eighth and ninth with 552 and 692 strokes.

New London took the conference title with 404 strokes, led by runner-up medalist Taylor Phillips, who shot a 91. Holy Trinity’s Alison Robu was the SEISC champion with a total of 90 strokes.

Aicher shot a 55 on the front nine and improved by a stroke on holes 10-18.

“Charlie was able to bring her golf game together late in the day and recover nicely from her front nine struggles,” Highland coach Travis Riggan said.

“Her putting was really good and she was able to make several long putts.”

Kelsi Cerny shot 62 and 57 for a total of 119, good for all-conference honorable mention. Riggan said that only one bad hole early in the day kept her off of the third team.

“She was able to play off the tee really well,” he said. “Her driver and hybrid were on point today. As a freshman going out and playing like she did is something to look forward to in the future.”

Jenna Waters shot six strokes better on the back nine to finish with a score of 134, while Kerra Longbine shot a 67 on the front nine and finished with a total of 136.

“As a team, collectively, we will be working on putting before regionals,” Riggan said.

The Huskies open postseason play on Monday, May 17 at Deerwood Golf Course in New London.
