After hitting a peak on Nov. 21, positive COVID-19 cases in Washington County have started to fall. On Nov. 21 the 14-day rolling total of positive cases was 407, which fell to 330 on Nov. 30. 

Cases rose steadily between the beginning of September and the end of November. On Sept. 1, Washington County only recorded 25 cases of COVID-19, but by Sept. 15, 65 cases were recorded. On Oct. 1, the county recorded 77 cases, which had risen to 149 by Nov. 1. 

Johnson County saw a peak in positive cases on Sept. 5 with the 14-day rolling total of positive cases hitting 2,083. While Johnson County has seen another spike this fall, the peak this time was 2,017 cases on Nov. 17. The 14-day rolling total of positive cases fell to 1,284 by Nov. 30. 

While Washington County’s positive cases rose more gradually, Johnson County’s rose sharply in the first half of November. On Nov. 1 the county recorded 654 positive cases, which more than doubled before hitting its peak on Nov. 17. 

The statewide rolling total of positive cases hit its peak on Nov. 17, with 58,939 cases. The previous peak in Iowa was on Sept. 5 when 12,655 cases were recorded. 

Buena Vista (15,467), Jones (11,271), Calhoun (11,094), Plymouth (11,046) and Sioux (10,679) are the highest counties in the state with positive cases per 100,000 population. Washington County comes in at 59th in the state (6,621) and Johnson County at 63rd (6,388). 

Statewide, about 37% of individuals testing positive for COVID-19 have shown symptoms of the illness and 7% of positive individuals have been asymptomatic. 54% of cases are pending investigation.
